A project is a set of tasks that need to be completed in a particular order to accomplish specific goals in a defined period of time. Each project has a life cycle, which is a structured, step-by-step approach that guides each project from its initial idea all the way to successful completion. Throughout the life cycle, the project manager is in charge of overseeing and controlling their team' progress in order to make sure that the project will be completed on time and within budget. The five key phases of Project Life Cycle are:

Initiation: This is the first and critical phase in the life cycle. In this phase, the project is defined and a feasibility analysis is done in order to determine whether or not the project should be undertaken. The project manager is also assigned. Once the project is approved, the project charter is then created to outline the scope, goals and requirements of the project. Key stakeholders, which include all individuals and teams involved in the project, are also identified during this phase.

Planning: In this phase, the project is taken out of the conceptualization stage and turned into a detailed action plan. The project plan is created, outlining the specific tasks needed, the resources required (equipment, budget.......), the project timeline, the goals/deliverables, and the communication plan. Simply put, the plan serves as a roadmap that shows exactly how the project will be executed, who will do what, when it needs to be done, and how much it will cost.

Execution: In this phase, the project plan is officially put into action. The team now needs to execute the tasks as defined in the plan. All tasks and responsibilities are appropriately assigned to those with relevant skills and knowledge while the project manager ensures effective team communication, resolves conflicts and provides necessary support and guidance. The project manager is also responsible for ensuring communication between the team and stakeholders while maintaining efficient workflow.

Monitoring and Control: This phase ensures that everything adheres to the project plan and prevent any issues from negatively affecting the execution. In this phase, the project manager sets up key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the performance against set goals. The project manager must also regularly track the progress to make sure that the project is on track as planned. Should there be anything lacking, the project manager must make the necessary adjustments to meet the required standards of quality.

Closing: This is the final and crucial phase that should never be overlooked. In this phase, the project manager formally concludes the project and ensure that everything is wrapped up neatly by delivering the final product, finalizing documents, closing out contracts and settling all payments etc. However, it doesn't just end there. The team should take some time to reflect back on the whole journey, discussing what went according to plans and what didn't, any challenges they encountered, which aspects could be improved for future projects.
